Preparation
Wow, I feel so proud... Here I am writing my very first ever blog post, and I'm pretty sure no one will even see it yet! A couple of months ago I decided to start exploring the state parks of Ohio with my boys. Since I don't have the income (or the vacation time) to go on fancy vacations to exotic places, I figured it's about time to start exploring our home state instead. Hotel rooms get pricey, but camping seems like a decent and fun alternative. Besides, I have two boys... and boys like to get dirty and rough it a bit, right?
About 4 weeks ago I was visiting www.pixelofink.com (a really fantastic site for those of you who enjoy your Kindles and free to cheap reading material), and one of the freebies that particular day was a download of Matt & Karen Smith's "Dear Bob and Sue". Matt and Karen are somewhere in their late 40's/ early 50's with grown kids and are inspired by the experiences of their good friends Bob & Sue to start visiting the National Parks. Not only do they decide to start visiting these parks, they both QUIT their jobs for over a year to travel around the country to do so. It took them a bit over two years, but they eventually made it to every single one of the 58 national parks, and the book is a series of e-mails they wrote to their friends Bob and Sue along the way. It was an excellent read, so if you're looking for something inspirational, go find it!
At any rate, having already made the decision to start visiting the state parks in Ohio, I was feeling so inspired by their experiences that I decided we would make a point to visit every single one of Ohio's state parks. I didn't find out until a few days ago that there are actually 73 of them, way more than I was aware of. I certainly cannot afford to quit my job, and it will definitely take at least a couple of years to get to them all, but we'll get there... and take many pictures along the way!
The best part? You'll get to read about our adventures right here in this blog! First up this weekend is Shawnee State Park, down at the southern end of Ohio almost in Kentucky, nestled within the Shawnee State Forest. So far it's just going to be J and I going, but if you're interested in joining us, let me know!
